I am grateful for the opportunity to have lead the Phi Mu Chapter this past year and hope I was able to stay true to the spirit of the club! I now pass on the mantle of leadership to Samara Smukler who will assume the position of President for the coming academic year. Though many of the faces have changed since then, the sense of camaraderie and our members shared passion for literature perseveres. As my time as President ends, I find myself looking back to the first SigTD meeting I attended four years ago. This is largely due to the dedicated efforts of the current executive board: Samara Smukler, Francesca Tabak, and Cassie Couri. Our members demonstrated their in-depth knowledge of topics spanning Shakespeare to FL Fairy Tales.ĭespite the difficulties of this past year, our chapter has managed to preserve the sense of community that distinguishes us from other organizations. This was followed later in March by the Phi Mu Spring Induction Ceremony where we inducted three new members to the International Society along with presenting to our membership several new owl statues recently added to our growing collection.įinally, we closed the semester in April with a chapter favorite: “Literary Jeopardy”. To mark the first “Wellness Wednesday” of the semester, we hosted a virtual movie screening of Little Women. The series was finished with a Workshop dealing with point of view where members would write a single scene from the points of view of two different characters. The second installation featured a group-build for a character to demonstrate how character development can be used to highlight plot elements. The first workshop in the series looked at character from a psychological perspective whereby members used the Myers-Briggs Test from their own perspective and then from the perspective of their favorite character in literature. Next began our Creative Writing Workshop Series for the semester which ran along the theme of “Defining Character”. We saw a variety of discussions which were used to lead up to the One Book One U keynote speaker: Ijeoma Oluo. In partnership with One Book One U and the UM School of Communications, the Phi Mu chapter released a video anthology series where students discuss media that is created by or features underrepresented groups. The Spring semester began in late January with a lighthearted game of Literary Pictionary where members showed off their drawing skills under pressure.įebruary marked the release of our Media that Matters collection. Though this past year has been a difficult one, the executive board has risen to the challenge with flexible event planning, creative problem solving, and an unparalleled commitment to community. ![]() ![]() The Phi Mu Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta closes the 2020-2021 academic year continuing our virtual programming. ![]()
